Dewormers

Ivermectin is the most commonly used dewormer. Worms have started to build up resistance to Ivermectin a few years ago because it is over-used and has been prescribed for monthly use in horses that have summer sores. Increasing frequency of ivermectin has not shown improvement in summer sores. The only method and product that completely treats summer sores is the Amare Equus Summer Sore Solution.

Dewormers should only be given two times per year.

  • In the spring (March/April)

  • In the fall (August/September)

Fecal tests determine the egg count and this is recommended once a year. The goal is 0 egg count. This test will also help to determine what is the best dewormer to give to your horse depending on what worms your horse has. I rotate the dewormer that protects against tapeworm with my horse.

When we rotate different dewormers on our horses we help to preserve a tool that protects our horses.

Good pasture management is important. Stalls need to be cleaned 2 to 3 times per day and pastures need to be cleaned every other day. This practice keeps the fly population down considerably.

When storing manure create a separate pile for the “pasture manure” (from grassy areas). Cover for future use in the form of nutrient rich fertilizer.

Create another pile of manure from the stalls that has pine shavings mixed in, as this pile should NOT be used for fertilizer.
