Barefoot Thoroughbred

It’s true that barefoot is better for optimal circulation in the foot, although there are some exceptions where shoes are necessary or recommended. Thoroughbreds, specifically, have hooves that are thinner and therefore more sensitive to rough rocky terrain.

A Barefoot Thoroughbred:

  • Ideal location: Florida or any place where the ground is softer and sandy.

  • When on rocky terrain thoroughbreds are likely to get a bruised hoof.

  • Bruised hooves take a month or two to heal

  • The compensation issues that are a direct result can cause months of soreness in the back, shoulders or hind end.

In this case, massage therapy and essential oils are highly recommended to combat soreness and stiffness.
